IMPROVE NOW

The Arsenal striker Theo Walcott has urged his teammates improve their performance in the upcoming weeks if they are to achieve their mission of finishing in the top four. After the recent 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea during the weekend, Arsenal have fallen seven points behind the top four positions. Hence, there is a real danger of the club missing out on the Champions League next season. The manager Arsene Wenger has been able to get Arsenal into this competition on consecutive occasions in the last 16 seasons, which is a record that very few clubs in Europe can boast.

Missing out on the Champions League next season will have disastrous consequences on Arsenal given that they rely heavily upon the finances from this competition. Playing in the group stages of the Champions League alone is expected to be worth around £ 30 million. The pressure on Wenger will also certainly increase if he does not qualify for the competition given that he has placed a lot of emphasis on qualifying for this competition rather than winning trophies like the League Cup. As a result, Walcott has urged his Arsenal teammates to step up the mark in the next couple of weeks in order to close the gap on the clubs like Tottenham.

“There are a lot of teams that have got stronger this year, so we need to step on the gas. We don’t want to be playing catch-up. We want to get points on the board. We have a tough game at home against West Ham so we need to be ready. It is a massive game, we have home support and we need to start clocking up points there. We have been hot and cold at home of late so we must be very positive and if we show the commitment that we did in the second half against Chelsea we should be fine,” said Walcott.

WALCOTT WANTS STARTING SPOT

The Arsenal striker, Theo Walcott, has said that he deserves to get regular starting opportunities. Walcott has not been a regular member of the Arsenal starting XI in the ongoing season.

However, in the recently played Champions League match against FC Schalke 04, Walcott started the match and scored the opening goal for the Gunners in the 18th minute of the match. That was Walcott’s eighth goal in the ongoing season. However, the Englishman also missed a goal scoring opportunity towards the end of that match. Had Walcott latched on that chance, Arsenal would have won that match.

That was the first Champions League start for Walcott in the ongoing season. Talking to the reporters after that match, Walcott said, “It’s always good to get a starting opportunity. I haven’t started too many matches in the ongoing season, but, I am happy that I have grabbed the opportunity that came my way. I think I played decently in the match and proved that I deserved to get more starting opportunities.”

When asked whether he thinks that he hasn’t been given regular starting opportunities so far because of his contractual dispute with club, Walcott said, “I don’t know about that. It might be the case, but, I am not sure. You should ask this question to our manager. He is the right man to answer this question.”

“I want to start more and more matches. Hopefully, I would be given another chance in the next match.”

When asked about that missed chance in the later part of the second half, Walcott said, “I am pretty disappointed because of that missed chance. It would have been a perfect match for me if I had made use of that chance. I tried hard, but, I got into a tangle with the ball.”

WALCOTT EXCITED AT CHELSEA GAME

The Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott has said that he is extremely excited at the prospect of playing against the European Champions Chelsea and Ashley Cole. Arsenal will be welcoming the European Champions Chelsea at the Emirates stadium during the weekend, followed by a visit from Manchester City (where we’ll fight for bragging rights with the chaps at Man City Football News!)

This is the biggest match of the season for Chelsea so far. Hence, they will be certainly excited at the prospect of taking three points that will once again reassert their position at the top of the table. The 23-year-old Theo Walcott has been linked with Chelsea amongst other clubs in the last few weeks.

He is out of contract at the end of this season and there has been no progress in the contract talks so far. He has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the last few weeks, while other clubs like Liverpool and City have also shown interest in signing the player. Theo Walcott has said in the last few weeks that he would like to stay at Arsenal. However, it is dependent upon the possibility of him being selected as the main striker rather than a winger. The player recently scored two goals in the league cup match against Coventry City.

“I don’t mind scoring against Chelsea. I’ve done well against them – they must probably hate me, to be honest. I don’t mind playing against Ashley either. I like playing against him. He is one of the best left-backs in the world and we have some very good battles against each other – in training as well for England. Maybe in the past few years I have had the edge on him. So I am sure when he sees all this he will be frustrated and he will probably want to kick the hell out of me, which is fine!” said Theo Walcott.
