David Ospina might have had some good days in the Arsenal jersey off late, but, he has still not overtaken Wojciech Szczesny in the pecking order.
Szczesny was Arsenal’s first choice shot stopper when the ongoing season had started and Arsene Wenger says he still is, but, Ospina is giving him tough fight with his performances.
Szczesny has not played any League match for the last 4-5 weeks. It’s Ospina who has been featuring and there were some stories in the media that the Colombia International had become the first choice for Wenger, but, the Gunners manager denied that yesterday.
Wenger’s words would have sent a clear message to Ospina that he must not start getting carried away; otherwise, he would find himself on the bench again.
As far as Szczesny is concerned, form was definitely one of the reasons for him being dropped. In that game versus Southampton which Arsenal lost by 0-2, his performance was rather forgettable.
He was to be blamed for some extent for both the goals that Arsenal conceded that day.
And, to make the day even more dreadful for himself, he was caught smoking and Wenger took an action on him, sacking him for the following Cup match.
Ospina played on his place and he did well enough. He has been retained since then, but, Wenger did try to suggest in his interview that the 26-year still has some work to do to become no. 1 at Emirates.
This is Ospina’s debut season at Arsenal. Wenger had bought him in July from Nice. He was talked about pretty highly in France and he is starting to make a reputation for himself here in England now as well. It’s just the start though for him. He has only had a few games under his belt.
