Walcott happy to stay

The 23 year old winger is entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates, meaning Arsenal would lose him for free at the end of the season should he decide to leave, and has consequentially been the subject of much gossip recently.

Speculation has linked the England international with a move to one of his current side’s Premier League rivals, reportedly attracting interest from both Chelsea and new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Although a transfer fee in the region of £15 million has been reported, the Arsenal man has stated he has no desire to move on from the side that finished in third place last season, and has moved to rubbish rumours that he is unwilling to sign a new contract in order to force through a transfer.

“It was always going to be [a case of] hold back until the end of the Euros,’ said the former Southampton man. “We continue to talk and we’ll just see where it goes.”

Indeed, Walcott has in fact expressed his happiness at his current situation and has come out in support of manager Arsene Wenger and his methods, unlike Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie who has expressed a desire to leave following growing frustration at a lack of silverware.

“The manager has got so much faith in the young players. He’s developed them. Every single one of them that comes in seems to suit the way that Arsenal play football,” said Walcott.

“It’s the next step that we need to go on to now. Everybody says that we’re a young team but we’ve got a lot of experience now – Champions League quarter-finals and so on.

“So we just need to try and prove people wrong and show what we can actually do and find out what we’re made of.”

Arsenal will be hopeful that Walcott will put pen to paper on a new deal in the near future and can help inspire his team to challenge for the league title once again.

WALCOTT CAN’T COMMIT

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has said that he does not want to commit his future to Arsenal until he has spoken with the club regarding the possibility of a new deal. The 23-year-old winger is out of contract at the end of the season, which puts him in a similar position as star striker Robin van Persie. It has been thought that Theo Walcott will be making his decision based on the future of Robin van Persie. Now that the Dutchman has confirmed that he wants to leave Arsenal and will not sign a new contract, the England winger has said that he will be taking a decision on his own future after speaking with the club.

He has travelled with the squad for the pre-season tour of Asia. The 23-year-old winger has been linked with a move to Chelsea or Liverpool in the summer. Arsenal will be looking for around £ 15 million for the winger, while they could lose him for absolutely nothing in the summer due to the fact that he turns 24 years of age in March. The former Southampton winger arrived at the Emirates stadium in £ 11 million deal. Despite having made more than 200 appearances, he is only 23 years of age.

“We were always going to wait till after Euro 2012 to hold talks. I’m not at all fazed by the speculation. I actually don’t have a clue about all the reports. I just like to get on with things and work hard. My agent and the club will talk things out and when there’s something to be decided, I’ll get involved,” said Theo Walcott while preparing for the pre-season tour of Asia with Arsenal. Robin van Persie will not be travelling within the squad after Arsene Wenger cited an injury as reason for this omission.

ARSENAL ARE DESPERATE

Arsenal are extremely desperate to tie winger Theo Walcott on a long-term deal as soon as possible. The 23-year-old midfielder is out of contract at the end of next season, which will enable him to talk with other clubs in six months time. Arsenal are in a position where they could lose Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott at the same time. Chelsea have emerged as the potential club to take advantage of this predicament for Arsenal. Even though Theo Walcott has come under intense criticism from Arsenal fans for his lack of an end product, the season that just concluded has been one of his most productive.

Arsenal value the midfielder at around £ 20 million, which could be a major stable in block in the winger signing a new contract. It is thought that Theo Walcott, who is currently on wages of around £ 70,000 per week, will be looking at parity alongside the top earners like Robin van Persie. Arsenal decided to offer Robin van Persie a contract in the region of £ 130,000 per week, but he is sceptical to commit to Arsenal considering their lack of trophies in the last seven seasons. Walcott could be faced with the same dilemma when he is presented with a new contract.

“With Samir and Cesc you can say ‘okay those two are gone’, but behind you know that there is Jack Wilshere and Van Persie still at the club – but if Robin comes to leave, that means next year it may be Theo Walcott, then the next year is it going to be Wilshere? It is going to be difficult for Arsenal to keep the top players,” said the former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira, who is currently the football development executive at Manchester City.
